Are the diamonds real?.........THE TOP QUESTION.......
We only manufacture REAL genuine diamonds. They have ALL the exact same properties of natural mined diamonds but are termed 'created diamonds' or laboratory grown diamonds and are extremely difficult to tell from their natural counterparts – in particular the 'Blues'. These are not diamond imitations like CZ (Cubic Zirconium) or Moissanite (Silicon Carbide), they are not 'DNA Diamonds' or any of the other vast number of bizarrely named diamond simulants available. If required, the diamond can be certified by AnchorCert: in the
How do I know it is a diamond made using my donation?
Trust us, please As members of the NAFD and also SAIF, we work to their – and our own - strict code of ethics. We feel compassionate and privileged to be able to provide you with a totally unique, everlasting and valuable memorial. All orders are uniquely identified throughout - from collection, manufacture to delivery.
How much does it cost?
Over the years we have tried to be as competitive and as reasonable as possible. We have made all sizes from 0.25 to 2.0 carat in various cuts. It costs almost as much to pre-process for a fractional diamond as it does a large one, so our costs are calculated specially and more frequently than this FAQ section allows. We realise this is an important decision not taken lightly, but if your funds are limited, choose a size to match your budget. We cannot profitably supply a single canary stone smaller than 0.5 crt (1/2 carat) but smaller ones are are made in orders of three's and pairs. We can make more than one diamond from the same donated material – i.e. 10 x .25crt (2.5 crt total) or three 0.75crt or a mixture of weights for the family bereaved.
What colours can be made?
We only grow NATURAL coloured diamonds. We do not 'irradiate' to change the colour. The usual and natural outcome when using human or animal carbon is a canary yellow diamond. It is also possible to make diamonds in NATURAL shades of blue [and by extra processing - pink, red and green]. We stick to two – Canary yellow and a Free-Range Blue. Mined diamonds in these colours are called 'fancies' and can costs many thousands of pounds per carat – sometimes more than white/clear diamonds we are all familiar with. The yellow and blue hue does nothing to not stop the fire and the scintillation of light sparkling through.
How do you do it?
All diamonds - natural and man-made - are basically carbon. It has been possible to manufacture real diamonds since the 1950's. We extract carbon from either 'cremains' (cremation ash) and/or a living person or pets hair. Our process is a trade secret, backed by years of expertise using very special scientific processes, but put simply - we emulate nature – by using fantastic heat, massive pressures, over a period of time. Instead of millions of years it can be achieved in a few months. We then cut and polish the created raw diamond just like mined ones have been for hundreds of years.
Are the diamonds flawless?
This answer goes along with the above (it is another frequently asked question). The straight answer is mainly "No". Just as in nature, many diamonds have flaws and inclusions, the material you donate is as unique as the resultant diamond, so we do not know until the process is complete, but we have years of experience. The very experienced cutter avoids such inclusions and flaws as much as possible and the highly polished 'brilliant cut' with 58 calculated facets allows all the flare and fire to flash from within the stone.
How long does it take?
From order to delivery, Canary diamonds can take around 13-15 weeks. We cannot state exactly how long as these processes are complex and difficult to determine. The manufacture of FR-Blue diamonds is slightly different and can take a lot longer. Orders are also subject to laboratory queuing as we take orders in the mail, from Europe and beyond.
How do I order?
This is an important but rare decision and purchase for you. We will gladly discuss arrangements directly with you - firstly by telephone and then later arrange to collect the material you wish to be made into a diamond, or we can write to you to give you all the details if meeting you is impracticable. We have a self-print order form on our website which also details our trading terms and conditions. Using deceased loved- ones hair or nails is
What do you need from me?
In short – The ashes (or hair), a signed order form and part payment : We need approx' 100 grams of ashes or 15-25 grams of hair – per carat - for the canary diamonds and 200 grams of ashes or 25-35 grams of hair for blue's. We will send you a complete pack and more info' - either for you or for your funeral director to help you.
What kind of payment do you offer?
We do not deal in cash, we prefer payment of both the deposit and final payment by cheque, bankers draft or transfer (all of which must 'clear' before beginning the process). Credit cards have been fraught with problems for us, however Credit Card Cheques are acceptable and of course – don't forget, the gap between payments can
Can I cancel?
Although not required (by law), we offer a 14 day cooling off period – for a full refund, even if you have paid a deposit and handed over material. But after that, we may have to make a charge, so we sincerely ask you to consider the implications of cancelling your order, for once we have started processing the material being used, the costs and charges will be mounting daily. Some of the process is difficult to stop, costs will depend on the work already carried out. Your order, our sales and the supply is subject to 'Terms & Conditions' detailed on the order form - written in plain English drawn up by British lawyers for both parties. We are sure you will not require hair or nail back, but if 'Cremains' have been partially processed - returns may be impracticable (if not
The whole thing it's very upsetting - but I want it doing.
You may already have the ashes or hair. There is no rush, no sales pressure from us. We would be delighted to assist you with filling in forms, dealing with donated material and payment. Wherever possible we can arrange for a personal service, to meet you, show you examples and collect all that is required. If this is impracticable, we can deal with all matters via Royal Mail secure post, using recorded delivery and even a courier.
